High Speed Homodyne Detector for Gaussian-Modulated Coherent-State Quantum Key Distribution Yuemeng Chi Master of Applied Science Graduate Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering University of Toronto 2009 We developed a high speed homodyne detector in the telecommunication wavelength region for a Gaussian-modulated coherent-state quantum key distribution experiment. We are able to achieve a 100 MHz bandwidth, ultra-low electronic noise and pulse-resolved homodyne detector. The bandwidth of this homodyne detector has reached the same order of magnitude of the best homodyne detectors reported. By overcoming photodiode response functions mismatch, choosing proper laser sources, ensuring the homodyne detector linearity and stabilizing the homodyne detection system, we demonstrate that the homodyne detector has a 10 dB shot-noise-to-electronic-noise ratio in the time domain at a local oscillator of 5.4 108 photons/pulse at a laser repetition rate of 10 MHz. With this homodyne detector, we expect to increase our GMCS QKD experiment speed by 100 times, which will improve the key generation rate by 1-2 orders of magnitude.

A wideband balanced homodyne detector for high speed continuous variable quantum key distribution systems
In Gauissian-modulated coherent-state quantum key distribution, the measurement of quadratures of coherent states is performed by using homodyne detector. However, the existing detectors usually suffer from narrow band. Here we present a method to design a high-speed shot-noise-limited balanced homodyne detector. A 300 MHz bandwidth detector was experimentally tested and the level of shot noise...

To improve the performance of a quantum key distribution (QKD) system, high speed, low dark count single photon detectors (or low noise homodyne detectors) are required. However, in practice, a fast detector usually is noisy. Here, we propose a “dual detectors” method to improve the performance of a practical QKD system with realistic detectors: the legitimate receiver randomly uses either a fa...
متن کاملSecurity of quantum key distribution with coherent states and homodyne detection.
We assess the security of a quantum key distribution protocol relying on the transmission of Gaussian-modulated coherent states and homodyne detection. This protocol is shown to be equivalent to an entanglement purification protocol using CSS codes followed by key extraction, and is thus secure against any eavesdropping strategy.
متن کاملDemonstration of coherent-state discrimination using a displacement-controlled photon-number-resolving detector.
We experimentally demonstrate a new measurement scheme for the discrimination of two coherent states. The measurement scheme is based on a displacement operation followed by a photon-number-resolving detector, and we show that it outperforms the standard homodyne detector which we, in addition, prove to be optimal within all Gaussian operations including conditional dynamics. We also show that ...

We designed high-efficiency error correcting codes allowing to extract an errorless secret key in a Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution (CVQKD) protocol using a Gaussian modulation of coherent states and a homodyne detection. These codes are available for a wide range of signalto-noise ratios on an Additive White Gaussian Noise Channel (AWGNC) with a binary modulation and can be combin...
